Actor & Producer
"Anil Kapoor is one of India’s biggest movie stars. He is one of the few stars who has been
consistently praised by critics and fans alike.
In the international arena too, his acting has been instantly acknowledged, even by the
harshest Hollywood critics, making him one of international cinema’s most prolific and
versatile actors today.
What is not so commonly known about him though, is that he is a highly successful movie
producer and media entrepreneur and even lesser known is his off-screen role as a
humanitarian.
Born in the suburbs of Mumbai, India, on December 24, 1956. Anil grew up surrounded by
the burgeoning Mumbai film industry. Against his father’s wishes, Anil decided as a
teenager to pursue the ‘unstable’ field of acting as a profession, and at age 19 he landed his
first role — sparking a career that would span 40 years (and counting), with appearances in
more than 150 films.
Within a couple of years of his debut, Kapoor gave his first hit (Who Saath Din) and by the
mid- eighties, having given back-to-back blockbusters at the box office year after year, he
had become the most sought after movie star of his time by continually reinventing himself
in a series of roles.
Kapoor has amassed Six Filmfare Awards (India’s Oscars) from fifteen nominations as an
actor and three prestigious National Film Awards for his work as an actor and filmmaker.
His Hollywood counterparts immediately recognized Kapoor with a Screen Actors Guild
award for his role in Slumdog Millionaire and in a short while he landed a role with a major
arc in the hit American TV series 24. His performance as the President of the fictional
Republic of Kamistan earned him praise from all quarters, with the Hollywood Reporter
stating that he was the best addition to the show.
By starring opposite Tom Cruise in 2012’s blockbuster Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol,
Kapoor’s ability to successfully bridge Hollywood and Indian cinema has only grown.
It was during the shoot of 24 - Season 8 that Anil saw the potential that the format held and
instantly saw a vision for how a local adaptation of it could change the face of Indian
Television that was stagnating with formulaic daily soaps. His perseverance and dedication
led to him successfully acquiring the remake rights of the hit American TV series 24,
making him the first ever producer to successfully negotiate and buy adaptation rights for a
fiction format as large as 24. Season 1 of the Indian adaptation of 24 went on to become the
most awarded Indian Television show of 2014, with a staggering 32 nominations and 16
wins including the best actor award for Kapoor. Season 2 of 24 India premiered on July
23rd, 2016 on COLORS and garnered very positive reviews. In bringing 24 to India, Anil had
effectively kick-started a revolution in Indian television much before Netflix and Amazon
Prime Video came into the picture. 24 India was successful in changing the Indian television
serial viewing experience. Anil Kapoor won a lot of praise for his portrayal of the Jai Singh
Rathore. There has been a lot of speculation & expectation for 24 India S3 since the Season 2
finale.
While Kapoor has been recognized globally for his fine acting talents, his actions behind the
scenes quietly have brought him an entirely different wave of respect: Without fanfare,
when he first signed on to the film, he donated his Slumdog Millionaire salary to the film’s
otherwise destitute Mumbai-based child actors — paying for their education, for life, and
giving them a shot at escaping the real-life slums from which Kapoor himself, thanks to the
film industry, had risen many years ago.
For a man who hosted the first-ever fundraiser for Children’s Right to Education in 2007; to
a man who had worked toward the reconstruction of schools in Uri, Jammu and Kashmir
after India’s devastating earthquakes that same year, it was a simple gesture. Kapoor had
long established himself as a humanitarian, serving as an ambassador for Plan India and
participating in numerous world concert tours for Indian settlers abroad. He also led the
“Learn Without Fear” campaign to prevent violence against children in schools in 2008, and
initiated a signature campaign (with his Slumdog Millionaire peers) to prevent the
exploitation and abuse of children in 2009.
As Kapoor continued to find critical success and achieve even greater American and
international fame, he continued to work to improve the lives of others — not only through
his on-going dedication to Plan India, but by standing alongside Bill Gates and Desmond
Tutu to support the International Rotary’s campaign to end polio.
In 2011, Kapoor began serving as an ambassador for CNN’s Freedom Project, joining a host
of other well-known celebrity humanitarians, including Demi Moore, Peter Gabriel and
Ricky Martin, to draw awareness to modern-day slavery. A CNN documentary, “Trapped By
Tradition” hosted and conceptualized by him won the Gold Medal at the New York Festivals
Awards in 2012.
His thoughts on World Compassion Day earned him special mention from the Honourable
Dalai Lama with whom he shared the stage.
But more than his professional achievements or humanitarian activities, Kapoor is most
proud to see his legacy carried on by his family: Actress Sonam Kapoor, Anil’s daughter who
made her debut in 2007 with Saawariya, is today one of the biggest stars of the country,
having delivered back to back blockbusters like Prem Ratan Dhan Paayo, Neerja and
Padman. Kapoor’s second daughter, Rhea, is a film producer who has successfully made
Aisha - a film that garnered cult status with the young women in the country, Khoobsurat -
Bollywood’s first collaboration with Disney, and more recently, the critically acclaimed Veere
di Wedding. Veere Di Wedding earned a lot of praise from the audiences for it’s bold and
honest depiction of the lives of modern-day Indian women. The film endeavoured to break
stereotypes and did so unapologetically, thus being hailed as truly path breaking in a lot of
ways.
Anil's youngest son Harshvardhan’s debut film Mirzya directed by Rakeysh Omprakash
Mehra released in 2016 to great fanfare. Harsh’s performance in the delightfully
unconventional Bhavesh Joshi has made the film a resounding success on Netflix, with
movie critics calling it a cult superhero phenomenon for young adults. He is currently
awaiting the release of a biopic on Abhinav Bindra in which he will be seen with his father,
making it a special film for them both. Adding to an already impressive filmography, Harsh
will be seen in a cameo role in his father’s upcoming Netflix project AKvsAK and his father
will be seen in a cameo in Harsh’s next big film – Thar! Thar is currently under post-
production and will release early in 2022.
In 2017, we saw Anil Kapoor in the family entertainer Mubarakan which was called a laugh
riot by audiences. Mubarakan was followed by the action-packed Race 3 with Salman Khan
in which Anil’s performance was hailed as the highlight of the movie. Adding to his
crossover repertoire, Anil was the voice of Baloo in the Indian Version of Mowgli -the Untold
Story of the Jungle on Netflix. In 2019, Anil was reunited with Madhuri Dixit after many
years in Total Dhamaal. Another highlight of the year was Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa
Laga in which he was seen on-screen with his daughter Sonam Kapoor for the first time. On
the heels of this project came Mohit Suri’s multi-starrer Malang, in which Anil’s
performance was hailed as outstanding even in an ensemble cast.
Anil Kapoor's latest accomplishments showcase his versatility and success in recent years.
One of his notable projects is ""AKvsAK,"" a Netflix original film directed by Vikram Aditya
Motwane. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, the film was a resounding success
and showcased Anil's ability to excel on the OTT platform, paving the way for other A-list
celebrities to follow suit.
In addition to ""AKvsAK,"" Anil Kapoor has been involved in several high-profile projects. He
starred in ""Thar,"" ""Night Manager,"" and ""Jug Jugg Jeeyo."" These projects have not only
garnered critical acclaim but have also earned him prestigious awards. In fact, ""The Night
Manager,"" Kapoor’s first collaboration with India’s leading OTT platform Hotstar, has
become the most-watched show across OTT platforms, a testament to Anil Kapoor's global
appeal and the quality of his work.
Looking ahead, Anil Kapoor has an exciting lineup of projects. He will soon be seen working
alongside Deepika Padukone and Hrithik Roshan in the highly anticipated movie ""Fighter.""
Following this thrilling venture, he will be seen in ""Animal"" alongside Ranbir Kapoor,
marking their first collaboration. Another exciting project titled ""Subedar,"" is in the works
and then there’s the keenly anticipated biopic on National sports hero Abhinav Bindra, the
story of India's first gold medalist, in which Kapoor will share the screen with his son
Harshvardhan Kapoor again, after their successful pairing in Thar.
With these remarkable achievements and promising projects on the horizon, Anil Kapoor
continues to shine in the world of entertainment, making 2024 a year to anticipate eagerly
for fans and industry enthusiasts alike.
